(NEW YORK — January 22, 2010) — MBL Communications, Inc. announced today the launch of Primary Psychiatry—Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Edition. A single-sponsored slightly customized version of the parent journal, the NP/PA Edition will deliver its trademark practical clinical content to a select subset of 15,120 NP/PA professionals who specialize in psychiatry and related mental health areas. The first of 6 issues in 2010 is slated for publication in February.
“As national health statistics indicate, the number of individuals who need mental health services is increasing as is the number of persons who have no access to treatment. Collaboration between providers will be key,” noted Kathleen R. Delaney, PhD, PMH-NP, Professor of Nursing at Rush College of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois, and editor of Primary Psychiatry—NP/PA Edition.
Increasingly faced with managing the growing number of mentally ill patients who present in primary care offices, hospitals, and community centers, NP and PA professionals have become an influential part of the interdisciplinary treatment team. These skilled men and women often serve as a patient’s point of first contact with the healthcare system and, spending ~60% of their time in direct care, provide a personalized, comprehensive continuum of care. NPs and PAs have a strong alliance with psychiatrists and are licensed to practice medicine with prescription authorization in all 50 US states. Thus, they are uniquely qualified to help meet the increased demand for psychiatrically oriented primary care services.
“Quality care relies on practitioners who are current with the growing evidence base for mental health treatment and recovery—a foundation drawn from both a disciplinary and broad base of scientific knowledge,” Dr. Delaney said. “The NP/PA edition of Primary Psychiatry is an important step in clarifying and disseminating that shared knowledge base. It will advance a common understanding of the evidence based treatments available for clients’ consideration and choice.”
In 2010, Primary Psychiatry—NP/PA Edition will provide psychiatric mental health NPs and PAs with important clinical content they can immediately apply to their practice. Guided by Dr. Delaney, the journal will publish applicable manuscripts that highlight recognition, diagnosis, treatment, and management of those who suffer from mental illnesses in our communities. Specifically, the first four issues will focus on innovations in therapies, psychopharmacologic guidelines, neurobiology of illness over the lifespan, and diagnosis of medical comorbidity.
